Mentoring Processes

The Formalization Process

The process of formalizing a mentoring relationship begins within each participating academic department. As described in the previous section, the chair and the new faculty member together are responsible for ensuring that a mentor is chosen within the first year of hire. Once the mentor is chosen, the mentor and junior faculty member should fill out the appropriate forms, available here, and submit copies to the Director of the Mentoring Program for Women in Science and the chair of the junior faculty member's department. Once the mentoring relationship has been established, the mentee should initiate regular meetings with the mentor.

The Evaluation Process

The Director of the Mentoring Program for Women in Science will track new women hires to ensure that mentoring relationships are formalized in a timely manner and maintained for the appropriate time period. He/She will also conduct an annual evaluation of the program using confidential surveys and interviews of participants. The results of these evaluations will be used to identify weaknesses in the program and to help the program evolve and improve over time.
