Progress in Recruitment

Impact

With the help of Project PACE, between 2003 and 2008, The University of Montana-Missoula increased the total percentage of tenure-track women science faculty from 17% to 24%.  Within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) departments, the proportion of women tenure-track faculty jumped from 11% in 2003 to 20% in 2007, while in Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) departments the percentage of tenure-track women increased slightly, from 36% in 2003 to 39% in 2007.

Additionally, Project PACE increases the proportion of women who interview for tenure-track positions in the sciences at UM-Missoula.  For instance, if a woman’s application is impressive but she is not the optimal candidate for the job based on fit to the position description, Project PACE will supply travel funds to the science department chairs, upon their request, to bring the woman to Missoula to interview.

Activities

The Director of Recruitment, Diana Lurie, meets with women visiting UM-Missoula as job candidates in the sciences, familiarizing them with the policies and procedures of the Missoula campus.  Separate from the hiring committee, Lurie serves as a one-on-one, independent resource for candidates and their spouses, allowing them the opportunity to inquire about tenure, spousal accommodation, and family needs.

Additionally, Lurie periodically assists campus search committees, advising them on ways they can expand applicant pools.  To aid search committees in the complicated process of recruiting, Lurie is currently creating and publishing a handbook of recruitment guidelines, along with a detailed overview of The University of Montana.

Tools for Hiring Committees

Increase the quality and diversity of applicant pools! PACE has created three pamphlets to aid search and hiring committees in selecting and evaluating candidates:
